Coronavirus: Free eBook for Children

Elizabeth Jenner, Kate Wilson, Nia Roberts and illustrator Axel Scheffler (The Gruffalo) have produced a free digital eBook on coronavirus for children and parents which provides straightforward explanations about coronavirus and its effects – both from a health perspective and the impact it has on a family’s day-to-day life.

This beautifully illustrated question and answer book is free for anyone to read on screen, print, or download, but publishers Nosy Crow, would like to encourage readers to make a donation to the NHS is they find the book useful: https://www.nhscharitiestogether.co.uk/   With input from expert consultant Professor Graham Medley of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, as well as advice from teachers and child psychologists, this is a practical and informative resource to help explain the changes we are currently all experiencing, which has been fully revised to reflect recent developments.

The book answers key questions in simple language appropriate for children of primary school age:

  • What is the coronavirus?
  • How do you catch the coronavirus?
  • What happens if you catch the coronavirus?
  • Why are people worried about catching the coronavirus?
  • Is there a cure for the coronavirus?
  • Why are some places we normally go to closed?
  • What can I do to help?
  • What’s going to happen next?

The pandemic has had a profound effect on children’s wellbeing and a lot of the information available is not in an accessible language or format for children to digest. Research shows that even very young children are aware of things changing around them and that their understanding evolves throughout childhood and adolescence. Having reliable information in such a format will open up conversations with parents and may even support siblings to communicate the information with each other by reading the book together particularly an older sibling to a younger sibling.
